WordPress SEO

If you’ve been around internet marketing for a while, or even if you are brand new, you probably know that optimizing your site or blog to get search engine traffic is one the primary jobs of any webmaster.  One of the best ways to get started down the right path is to put a WordPress blog on your own domain, as search engines like Google simply love blogs.

Assuming you have already done this, then the next step is to start prepping your blog to be as search engine friendly as possible.  After all, search engine traffic is free traffic, which can lead to a larger subscriber base, exposure of your blog through various social media sites, more MLM recruits, potentially more sales of a product or service, etc.  All good things.

Therefore, it is worth the small investment of time to make your blog as SEO friendly as possible.  While the WordPress platform is a great start, there are ways to make your blog much more likely to get good SEO results.  One of these is through the use of third party applications, known as plug-ins.  Fortunately, there are a number of very good SEO plug-ins that can be easily be added to your blog.

The most important one is the All In One SEO Pack, which has many must-have features to boost your ranking, once installed and activated.  This includes:

  • Optimized Titles
  • Custom Post Types
  • Canonical URLs
  • Auto-Generated Meta Tags
  • Fine Tuning Page Navigation Links

Beginners can just use the default out-of the-box settings, while advanced bloggers can tune it as they like.

Another avenue that is becoming popular is using a WordPress premium theme/framework.  While most of these are not free like standard WordPress themes, they provide built-in SEO without the need for any additional plug-ins.  Some of the up-and-comers in this genre include:

  • Thesis
  • Frugal
  • Headway

If you are on a budget, then check out Atahualpa, which is open source and available at no cost.  Be aware though that you are likely to get superior support from one of the paid themes.

While we are discussing SEO, remember, the single best way to get search engines coming is to provide them with consistent, high quality, unique content – in the form of posts, articles and your own videos.  Because without good content attracting visitors, all the SEO tweaks in the world won’t matter.
