One of the questions that I still get from those who are relatively new to the internet, is whether they should have a website or a blog as their primary web presence.  The short, easy answer is a blog, of course!  A blog is the perfect starting point for those in need of an online presence, online branding, online traffic, online lead generation, online selling, etc.

But that does not really address the reasoning why a blog is a better choice than a website.  And just so you know, I have nothing against websites and have constructed many of them over the years.

In today’s Web 2.0 world, there are some definitive advantages of blogs over websites.  I am also basing this on my favorite blogging platform – WordPress.  More specifically, a WordPress blog hosted on your own site, versus one hosted at WordPress.org.

And although WordPress was designed as a blogging platform tool, you don’t have to use it as such.  With the right expertise and tweaking, WordPress can actually be used to run your website, with or without a blog.  But the fact that WordPress was designed as a blogging platform gives it a compelling advantage over other options.

General Blog Pros:

• You can be your own self-sufficient webmaster
• Allows for interaction with visitors through comments
• Easy to continually update content by adding new posts
• SEO friendly site and linking structure
• Easy to add multimedia such as audio and video
• No expensive or complicated web editors (Dreamweaver, Go Live, Microsoft Expression Web)
• Does not require knowledge of HTML or CSS
• Ability to syndicate blog articles via RSS
• Can get backlinks from social networking sites
• Others can share or tout your blog on social bookmarking sites

WordPress Specific Pros:

• Free Open Source platform
• Blog and a website all in one depending on theme layout
• Easy to use Visual Editor
• Hundreds of free professional themes
• Themes are easily customized
• Premium themes and theme frameworks are commercially available
• Content creation and management are done using a web browser
• Added functionality with the use of third party plug-ins.
• Uses standard PHP and MYSQL
• Supported on most all web hosts
• Multi-user option

So, not surprisingly, my choice for an MLM or Network Marketing site would have to be WordPress.
