Blogging Your Brand

Aug 23rd, 20105 Comments

With millions of sites and blogs out there, you must find a way to separate from the crowded masses and distinguish yourself as a unique individual.  The best way to accomplish this is by personal branding.

If you think about blogs that you frequent consistently, it most likely because you resonate with something there.  It could be due to the blogger’s unique perspective, reputation, writing style or depth of knowledge.  Whatever the case, they have managed to brand themselves in some way that keeps you coming back for more.

Now some might argue that the personal brand is irrelevant and that the reason the blog gets its’ traffic is strictly because of all the great content.  While that may be argued, who is that determines the content?  Would it not be the blog owner?  After all, content does not magically appear by itself.  If you have tried to write articles, record audio or make videos, you know this to be true.  So, in essence, the choice of content, as well as the type of content is filtered by the owner’s/author’s choices, which ties back into their own personal brand.

Personal branding, which is an extension of your knowledge, insights and experiences, helps make your blog different.  Yes, there are going to be hundreds, maybe thousands of blogs on any given subject.  Unless you are in a very specialized micro-niche, the same information can be usually found elsewhere in many places.

But don’t worry about any of that.  Just blog from heart and know that the more content you produce, the more your own distinctive style will shine through.  By putting your own spin on the subject, you will make it unique.  Don’t concern yourself, about whether everyone who comes by, will think you are the greatest thing since sliced cheese.  No matter what your style or personality, opinions will vary on both sides of the coin.  And readers are readers, whether they love you or hate you.

So, no matter what others may say about you, keep building that personal brand

    Hi Scott,
I’m in your camp on this one. Defining your personal brand carries across all roads of social media…not just your blog. it’s a sure fire way to separate yourself from others and to stand above the crowd.

  2. Hi Scott,
When you write from a place of authenticity, you will naturally brand yourself effectively and become memorable to those who follow you online. I think the term “personal branding” scares a lot of people — it puts them on edge, and creates paranoia. Who am I? they ask. What do I have to say? And so instead of being true to themselves, they adopt a style or try to be just like the online Hotshot of the Day. This approach never works.

It is as you say: blog from the heart, be real, be true to who you are, and you will be remembered for that.

  3. Hello Scott, this is something that worries most internet marketers…at least it should if you’re serious about building an online business.

Branding yourself is nothing more than creating a presence! Whether that presence be online or offline, the same principles apply.

Why do online marketers attempt to create a personal brand by portraying themselves as something they are not? You wouldn’t do that if you opened a brick-&-mortar business, would you?

The “secret” to branding yourself – is to BE yourself!

Otherwise you’re potentially living two lives…& one of them is a lie!

  4. Hey Scott,

Great article and insight. As I am starting this new journey of blogging, I can see the value and importance of keeping it real and as your article mentioned, blogging from the heart. This is a chance for your readers to really get an inside view of who “You” are, which ultimately is “Your brand”. Thank you for your leadership and valuable knowledge.

  5. Hi Scott,

I think where a lot of people get stuck with their personal branding strategy, is becoming comfortable with putting their own unique spin on content that is possibly already out there.
As you said, most content is already out there somewhere in some shape or form but it’s how we present it that becomes part of our brand. When I’m searching for info, sure there are loads of results on google I could choose from but it’s the person’s unique way of presenting that attracts me to their blog.

Great content is important but ultimately it’s your personality, your teaching style etc that makes your personal brand stand out.
