Blog Content – Video Vs. Text

As you know, I am very much into online video, as well as blogging.  So it would not be much of a stretch of to take the concept one step further and host a blog full of videos instead of text.  After all, sites like YouTube, Viddler, Daily Motion and Metacafe do very well with nothing but video content.

But is that a good idea?

There are different schools of thought.  For one, video is a far more dynamic venue than plain old static text.  And many visitors, especially those with short attention spans, may find viewing videos easier than reading long blocks of written blog posts or sales copy.  Videos can encourage visitors to stay on your blog longer, presuming they are informed or entertained by your videos.

Some bloggers and webmasters also find it much easier to articulate their ideas on screen, as opposed to on paper.  Not everyone has great writing skills and for those that don’t, video can be a lifesaver.  Videos also allow for a more creative and interactive approach.  Which is why, for example, training videos are far more popular than conventional help files for learning to grasp a new piece of software.

Those who are skilled with a digital camcorder can produce and post completely original videos on relevant subject matter, instead of using clips that are available elsewhere on the net.  The tradeoff is no competition on your own site or blog, versus a lot of competition on trendy video sharing sites, but with considerably more potential exposure to your videos.

The cost of entry for posting videos has also dropped dramatically, though you may want to take bandwidth costs into consideration, if you are planning on a video blog.  Something you don’t have to worry about when simply embedding clips from sites like YouTube.

My take?  While a blog with videos and nothing else might be an entertaining proposition, I prefer to take a more balanced approach, mixing in video with articles, posts, reviews, etc.  The beauty is that you may do it however you like, to best suit the needs of your visitors.
